April is Irritable Bowel Syndrome Awareness Month> Home > Irritable Bowel SyndromeIrritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is classified as a "disorder of functioning" where the normal movement of the intestines, the sensitivity of the nerves of the intestines, or the way in which the brain controls some of these functions is impaired. There are not structural abnormalities that can be seen by endoscopy, x-ray or blood tests. IBS is identified by symptoms. Are you aware that one in five Americans has symptoms of IBS? IBS occurs more often in women than in men. IBS symptoms most commonly include: cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. IBS can cause pain and discomfort, but it does not permanently harm the intestines and does not lead to a serious disease, such as cancer. Most people can control their symptoms with diet, stress management, and prescribed medications. For some people, however, IBS can be disabling. They may be unable to work, attend social events, or even travel short distances. You cannot prevent IBS. You can minimize the symptoms by:
