Diabetes Support Group Meeting Highlights
February 17, 2009
The Diabetes Support Group held their first meeting of the year on February 17 with the topic being "Healthy Heart". February is recognized as heart health month nationwide and it is hoped that further knowledge will encourage all of us to make some better decisions.
The American Heart Association recognizes certain factors that increase the liklihood of heart disease. These factors are further divided into things that cannot be changed and those that can be changed. Some things that can't be changed include age, sex, hereditary, and race.
The risk factors that can be modified by lifestyle changes or treatment include
high cholesterol, smoking, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, diabetes, being overweight, poor diet, alcohol use, and stress. Those present were able to identify most of these so they already had some familiarity with the topic.
From that point there was a discussion on each of the items that we have some control over. Most of these risk factors revolve around making better choices in our eating habits and increasing our physical activity. Your health is worth the continued effort.
If you would like more information on this topic or have other questions regarding diabetes, please speak with your provider or plan on attending the next diabetes support meeting on March 17,2009 at Prairie Clinic. March is National Nutrition month and the speaker will be JoEllen Neefe, registered dietician and new diabetes educator. For more information please call Rita at 644-2458.
