Diabetes Support Group Meeting Highlights
February 17, 2009
The Diabetes Support Group held their second meeting of the year on March 17 with the topic being "March is National Nutrition Month®". National Nutrition Month® is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the American Dietetic Association.
The 2009 theme for National Nutrition Month® is "Eat Right".
Key Messages:
- Focus on Variety. Eat a variety of foods from all of the food groups to get the nutrients your body needs.
- Make Your Calories Count. Think nutrient-rich rather than "good" or "bad" foods.
- Know Your Fats. Look for foods low in saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol to reduce the risk of heart disease.
- Physical Activity for Fitness and Health. Set a goal to be physically active at least 30 minutes every day in order to manage your weight and promote overall health and fitness.
- Healthy Eating Habits for Kids. Parents can help children improve their eating habits by making healthy changes a part of the daily routine.
After a discussion on the key messages from National Nutrition Month®, we looked at test tubes that contained different amounts of fat and sugar in various food items. This visual activity stirred conversation among those present.
We also talked about blood sugars with participants sharing their experiences of low and high blood sugars. In addition, we also discussed recipe modification and sugar substitutes.
If you would like more information on this topic or have other questions regarding diabetes, please speak with your provider or plan on attending the next diabetes support meeting on April 21, 2009 at Prairie Clinic.
