Diabetes Support Group Meeting Highlights
April 21, 2009
The Diabetes Support Group held their third meeting of the year on April 21 with the topic being "Traveling with Diabetes." (Note: This was a change from the schedule. "Get Moving" will be held on May 19.)
Approaching the summer months means we will be traveling: graduations, weddings, reunions, family vacations, you name it…are you prepared? Having diabetes should not stop you from traveling to new and exciting places. People with diabetes can enjoy traveling just as well as anyone else. Although, you do have to do some extra planning before going on vacation to make sure you stay healthy and safe while away from home. "No one plans to fail, we just fail to plan."
Our discussion on traveling with diabetes included: meeting with your Provider and/or diabetes educator prior to going on a vacation; possible medication adjustments when crossing time zones; meal planning and eating out; exercising while on vacation, and a travel checklist was provided. We also discussed "what if…" (mechanical breakdowns, traffic delays, bad weather, etc.). You always want to be prepared for the unexpected.
If you would like more information on this topic or have other questions regarding diabetes, please speak with your provider or plan on attending the next diabetes support meeting on May 19, 2009 at Prairie Clinic. The Cardiac Rehab Specialists from SPMH will be here to provide motivation to "Get Moving". For more information, please call Rita at 644-2458.
