Carbohydrate Counting
Diabetes Support Group Meeting Highlights
August 18, 2009
On Tuesday, August 18, JoEllen Neefe, RD, CD spoke to the Diabetes Support Group on carbohydrate counting. Carbohydrate or "Carb" counting can help manage blood sugars and allow for flexibility in meal planning. Carbohydrates supply the body with energy and are found in various foods, such as grains, breads, cereals, rice, pasta, fruits and fruit juices, milk and yogurt, starchy vegetables, and sweets and desserts.
How many "carbs" do you need? The amount of carbs varies from person to person based on:
- Weight
- Activity level
- What, when, and how often you eat
- What and how much diabetes medicines you take
- Your blood sugar control
- Your blood cholesterol control
We practiced carb counting, reading a nutrition facts label, and we reviewed blood sugar goals. To learn more about carb counting, you can set up an appointment with JoEllen Neefe, RD, CD at Prairie Clinic. Our next diabetes support group meeting will be on September 15 at 6pm at Piggly Wiggly grocery store in Sauk City where Dr. Baker will be providing grocery shopping tips.
