Diabetes Meal Planning: Easy as 1, 2, 3!

Diabetes Support Group Meeting Highlights
March 16, 2010

> Areas of Care > Diabetes Care > Diabetes Support Group > Meal Planning

On Tuesday, March 16, 2010, JoEllen Neefe, RD, CD spoke to the Diabetes Support Group on diabetes meal planning. JoEllen discussed the many benefits of meal planning including: improving blood sugar, blood pressure, blood cholesterol, and weight management. She discussed three steps to diabetes meal planning.

Step 1: Know your meal plan.

  • A general carbohydrate range for most people with diabetes can vary from 45-75 grams/meal and 15-30 grams/snack.
  • Your diabetes educator or registered dietitian can help you determine how many grams of carbohydrate you need for meals and snacks.

Step 2: Know your carbohydrates.

  • Most of the carbohydrates we consume come from grains, fruits, starchy vegetables, milk and yogurt, and "others".
  • The amount of carbohydrates that you need in a day are based on:
    • Weight
    • Activity level
    • What, when, and how much you eat
    • What and how much diabetes medicines you take
    • Your blood sugar control
    • Your blood cholesterol control

Step 3: Use carbohydrate counting in meal planning.

  • We reviewed the foods that contain carbohydrates and we discussed portion sizes. The group practiced carbohydrate counting using food labels and we created a sample meal plan.
