Making the Most of your Diabetes Education Appointments

Diabetes Support Group Meeting Highlights
July 20, 2010

> Areas of Care > Diabetes Care > Diabetes Support Group > Making the Most

On 7/20/2010 the topic of discussion at the Prairie Clinic Diabetes Support meeting was making the most of your diabetes appointments. If you come prepared, it is more likely to benefit both provider and person with diabetes. We encourage you to bring list of questions. If the list is too long, it may require setting priority for items and saving some for the next visit.

Ideally we would ask that you record your blood sugars on paper for review. In fact we encourage that everyone write them down so you are able to make notes as needed. Sometimes it is helpful to know that you went out to a buffet dinner later in the evening and that is what caused you to have a high sugar reading. Also please record that you skipped a meal or were late eating it and then had a low blood sugar. We like for you to learn from your testing.

We would like you to know your goals for blood sugar, weight, cholesterol, and blood pressure so you are able to work on goals to get to target range. The idea behind diabetes education is for you to learn as much as you can about the disease so you are able to manage your health in between visits. Keep in mind that there may be a team of health professionals working with you but you are the star player. We want you to make the visits count and before you leave, please know when you should return for a visit or lab work.

The next meeting for Prairie Clinic Diabetes Support Group will be held on Tuesday, August 17 at 6PM and we will be discussing mindful eating. We recognize that often we eat for the wrong reason and will encourage you to pause before you eat.
