Have your Holiday and Eat It Too
Diabetes Support Group Meeting Highlights
November 15, 2011
On Tuesday, November 15, 2011 JoEllen Neefe, RD, CD, CDE spoke to the diabetes support group on Managing Diabetes During the Holiday Season.
The holiday season can be full of food temptations and busy schedules can make it difficult to fit in regular exercise and healthy meals.
But don't despair. With a little planning, you can enjoy the holidays.
Plan Ahead:
- Know your meal plan ahead of time, which will make it easier to know what and how much to eat when you are dining away from home.
- Prepare, portion, and freeze meals ahead of time that are lower in fat, sugar, and sodium in order to have meals on hand when you busy or in a hurry.
- Schedule your exercise before you schedule holiday activities. If you don't plan to exercise, it may not happen.
- Focus on one or two diabetes self-management goals during the holiday season, such as keep a food journal.
General Guidelines for Healthy Eating:
- Never arrive to a party or holiday meal hungry.
- Eat smaller, lower calorie foods during the day prior to going to a gathering or party.
- Plain basic food is always the safest. Watch out for sauces, gravies, cheese sauces, cream sauces, and casseroles.
- Fill half of your plate with low-calorie vegetables.
- Fruit from the fruit basket is the best dessert.
- Coffee and unsweetened tea are free foods. Add an artificial sweetener if needed.
Happy Holidays! We wish you a peaceful holiday season!
