Prairie Clinic's Healthy Nutrition Program works in conjunction with the providers in the education, care and management of patients with special nutritional needs. The prorgam gives instruction and counseling regarding eating properly with medical conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol and weight management issues, as directed by your provider.

Tools, such as food models and menu planners, are used to help patients visualize the proper serving portions and help patients meet their nutritional goals.

ChooseMyPlate.gov is a resource to individuals, health professionals, nutrition educators, and the food industry to help consumers build healthier diets with resources and tools.

Tips for Health

National Dairy Month

Every June we celebrate National Dairy Month, a great time to review the role that dairy plays in our health.
Low-fat and fat-free dairy foods deliver many important nutrients, including some that we often lack enough of, such as calcium, vitamin D, and potassium. Eating and drinking dairy foods appears to be linked to bone health; a reduced risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes; and lower blood pressure in adults, yet many of us don't consume enough.
Here are some easy ways to incorporate low-fat or fat-free dairy products into your meals.

  • Add low-fat cheese to your morning omelet.
  • Enjoy a low-fat yogurt or yogurt smoothie with breakfast.
  • Top soups and salads with low-fat cheese.
  • Add low-fat milk to cereal or oatmeal.
  • Lighten up your coffee or tea with low-fat milk rather than a powdered nondairy creamer.
  • Try evaporated fat-free milk instead of cream in your coffee for a creamery texture with less fat.
  • Snack on low-fat string cheese or plain yogurt with fruit.
  • Drink low-fat milk with lunch or dinner instead of a soda.
  • Use plain, low-fat yogurt or cottage cheese as a sour cream substitute.
To find out if you're eating enough dairy foods and learn how to incorporate more low-fat and fat-free dairy into your eating plan, consult a registered dietitian in your area or visitwww.eatright.org
